Latest Horsham History volume added online

The horrors of the First World War have been well documented, but what was it like on the home front and, in particular, the Horsham district?

The latest addition to Horsham’s History online goes into great detail.

As part of the Friends’ commitment to add all of Jeremy Knight’s volumes of history to this website we are pleased to announce the addition of Volume 4.

This deals with the Great War years (1914-18).

During those years Horsham saw a great many troops marching through and even staying in the town for short periods.

Jeremy reveals what it was like to live through those times for ordinary folk as war raged on across the sea.

We discover how one of the town’s citizens spent his time as a spy in Norway and how a champion of women’s suffrage was received when she came to the town (not very well is the answer!).

There’s also information of wartime rationing and conscription and even a look at how the district began to recover from the after-effects of so many years of fighting and bloodshed.

You can find Volume 4 on the Friends’ website, along with the other volumes.
