On this day, May 20, in 1989 traders in Horsham’s old market at Piries Close (now Place) shut up shop for the final time.
Two years before, the West Sussex County Times had announced that traders were ‘in limbo’ as plans had been put in place to redevelop the whole area, including Burton’s Yard where the market was.
And now it was time, on this final Wednesday, to hold a sale to encourage last-minute shoppers and to plan for the future.
The market had suffered a serious blow in 1986 when a serious fire decimated some of the stalls. However, it had bounced back.
