Horsham’s lost pubs

Last year Horsham Museum & Art Gallery ran a very popular feature via its social media channels on the pubs of Horsham, using photos from the archives.

It was part of its regular #ThrowbackThursday posts.

It focussed on those pubs that are still around or those that had closed in living memory.

However, Horsham had several other hostelries that disappeared decades ago, so we’ve looked through the Museum’s archives to pull together the accompanying video.

The pub is no longer in Queen Street but the sign can still be seen.

One of them is The Plume of Feathers. Interestingly, while the pub has long gone, the sign in Queen Street still hangs proudly as a memory of this particular establishment!

While most of the town’s pubs have been featured either last year via #ThrowbackThursday or in this video there are still some that we don’t have photos of.

These include the Bricklayers Arms in the Bishopric and the Good Intent in London Road.

In fact Horsham once had the greatest number of pubs per population in the country (around 50!). There were also hotels and beer shops.

Recently, several town pubs have been flattened to make way for housing or other uses, such as the Nelson in Nelson Road, the Rising Sun in Pondtail Road and the Hop Picker in North Parade.
