Surprise find in Horsham Museum watercolour collection

Museum Friend Rick Domas, who is preparing for a forthcoming talk, made a surprising discovery.

He writes: “In rummaging through the watercolour collection of the Horsham Museum recently in prep for a presentation to the Friends of Horsham Museum, I came across our house (below)!

“Painted in 1870 by an unknown artist, it depicts a portion of Talbot Lane (or historically Pump Alley), one of the oldest sections of Horsham dating to medieval times.

“Our house, like many around us, is an amalgam of 15th -16th -17th Century architectural styles.

“Our specific house is the brick-fronted one (centre) and cream-coloured Tudor-framed one (left of centre).

“The tunnel from Talbot Lane to the alleyway alongside Bill’s Restaurant lies beneath our living room.

“The dining room has lovely original frescoes (see below) from ‘way back’, lovingly maintained over the centuries by previous attentive owners.

“The presentation Watercolours in the Horsham Museum Collection is scheduled for Wednesday, 30 July, 2pm, in the lounge of the Cornerstone Methodist Church, London
Road, Horsham.

“Admission is £5, refreshments included.”
