Chance to appreciate Horsham telegraph poles!

Have you taken a step back and appreciated a good telegraph pole?

No? Not surprising really. They are probably not the first items of street furniture that you might admire.

However, today’s the day to change all that as it’s Telegraph Pole Appreciation Day!

A good row of telegraph poles in Crawley Road, Horsham, in the 1930s.

Each year the day is dedicated to what is described as ‘one of the most unassuming yet historically significant elements of modern civilization’.

The history of these poles starts in the mid 19th Century with the arrival of the telegraph and the advancement in communication.

On this day everyone is encouraged to go for a walk and check out the telegraph poles in the area and perhaps even take a photo and share it on social media with the hashtag #TelegraphPoleDay.

We’ve had a little look into the archives and found these three local advertising signs. They are curved so they could fit round the pole and be nailed on.

So, perhaps as you walk round the area you might not just ignore those tall poles that have a long history.
