Mystery over Horsham ‘milestones’

One of the Friends of Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has come up with a bit of a mystery that we are hoping our subscribers or social media followers may be able to solve!

As he was strolling along North Parade in the heart of Horsham on New Year’s Day he came across a milestone that points out that it’s 36 miles to Westminster Bridge (36 from Westr Bridge).

However, flanking it are two more modern pieces of street furniture with lines of poetry on them.

One reads ‘And Miles To Go Before I Sleep’, which is a line from American poet Robert Frost’s work Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.

The other, ‘Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost’, is from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Frost’s line refers to life’s journey before the final rest, while Tolkien’s means that taking an unconventional path could end up on a journey of self-discovery.

Both are strong messages, but who put them there and why?

We’d love to know as our search online and through the Museum records has come up blank.
