Horsham art – Dr Geoffrey Sparrow

As Horsham Museum’s full title reveals, it has a big interest in art and has several works on show and in the archive.

In our occasional series looking at featured artists in the collection we focus on Dr Geoffrey Sparrow.

Dr Sparrow (pictured below) was born in 1887 in Devon and went on to have a distinguished military career during both the First and Second World Wars after studying medicine at university.

He moved to Horsham in 1919 to take up his chosen profession, but his passion was art and he would take every opportunity to get his sketchbook out.

He enjoyed creating caricatures of local folk but was happy to paint landscapes, hunting scenes and imaginary Horsham scenes from the past.

Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has numerous examples of his work and our slideshow reveals just a fragment of his output.

After his retirement he devoted even more time to his hobby and was still producing works up to his death in 1969.
