Acquisitions

An important part of the work of the Friends is helping the Museum acquire artefacts. These can be paintings, books, ceramics, photographs etc.

In this section of the website we will flag up some of the many acquisitions bought with Friends funds. Many were bought outright by the Friends, while others were jointly acquired. Scroll down to see the varied objects that have been acquired over the years!

The latest acquisitions – Posey Rings and a Nummular Brooch below – are featured below. These have been obtained thanks to the continuing help by the Friends and through the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

Nummular Brooch

A nummular brooch has gone on display which dates from the mid-13th century and is adapted from a Gros Tournois coin from the reign of King Louis IX of France.  The practise of adapting coins into brooches was quite popular in the 1200s.
