Forty years ago today (March 30) Horsham Museum’s barn was officially opened by the then Curator Evan Perry.
Many visitors to the Museum may be forgiven for thinking this impressive building has always been a part of Causeway House.

But no, it was formerly situated on the Hills Place Estate, a country farm where the Hills Farm development now stands.
The barn was bought back in 1977 when the land, formerly owned by the Ingram family, was sold and just ten days were given to remove it!
It dates back to the 18th Century and was used for storing farm equipment and produce.
After being acquired by the Museum it lay in storage for a number of years. Then in 1982/83 it was re-built under a scheme jointly carried out by the Manpower Services Commission and Horsham District Council which provided work for the unemployed.
No surprise it is the Museum’s largest artefact!
