Horsham Museum featured on BBC’s Bargain Hunt

The amazing collection of more than 1,000 posters, formerly owned by Horsham resident William Albery, were featured in the latest episode (August 24) of BBC TV’s highly popular daytime series Bargain Hunt.

Horsham Museum & Art Gallery Curator Nikki Caxton welcomed the show’s host Charlie Ross to the Museum where a selection of the posters were on show in the Library.

William Albery was an important local tradesman, as well as an historian and avid collector. On his death in 1950 he donated his collections of artefacts and documents, including the large selection of posters, to the town of Horsham.

The William Albery Poster Collection contains more than 1,400 posters from Horsham District, covering 270 years of the area’s history.

Nikki chose just a few examples, including an appeal for a stolen fat sheep, a concert to raise money for the victims of the Titanic and instructions on how to avoid catching Spanish flu.

Each poster demonstrates the bold typography and social history that Albery loved so much.

Many of the posters have been included on a website dedicated to the collection, created by the Friends of the Museum.
